Philodendron ‘Ring of Fire’ is a rare and highly coveted hybrid, believed to originate from the rainforests of Central and South America. It’s thought to be a cross between Philodendron wendlandii and Philodendron tortum, possibly first noted in the early 1800s. This plant is named for its jagged, serrated leaves splashed with fiery patches of orange, red, cream, pink, and green—each leaf is unique, offering a dynamic living display that shifts with new growth and changing light.

Care Requirements:

  • Light: Needs bright, indirect light for several hours daily. A bit of gentle morning sun is beneficial, but avoid direct midday rays to prevent scorching. Low light may cause variegation to fade.

  • Water: Water thoroughly when the top 1–2 inches of soil are dry. It prefers moist—but never waterlogged—soil. In summer, that’s roughly once a week; less often in cooler months.

  • Humidity: Tolerates average indoor humidity (30–60%), but higher levels (60%+) encourage better leaf size and coloration. Mist or use a humidifier if your air is dry.

  • Temperature: Comfortable in temperatures from 55–85 °F. Ideal range is 65–80 °F. Protect from cold drafts and avoid sudden temperature drops.

  • Soil: Use a chunky, well-draining aroid mix with components like orchid bark, perlite, and coco coir. The soil should retain moisture without becoming soggy.

  • Growth Habit: A slow-growing climber with serrated leaves that can reach 3 feet tall and produce leaves up to 24″ long. It appreciates a moss pole or trellis to support upward growth, which often enhances leaf size.

  • Fertilizer: Apply a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer once monthly during spring and summer. Reduce or stop feeding in fall and winter.

  • Propagation: Propagate via stem cuttings containing at least one node and, ideally, an aerial root. Root in water, moss, or directly in soil.

  • Toxicity: Toxic to pets and humans if ingested; contains calcium oxalate crystals—keep it out of reach.

Care Difficulty: Moderate
This philodendron demands patience and consistency. Its striking multi‑colored foliage rewards growing attention to light, moisture, and support. Ideal for dedicated collectors seeking a dramatic, living centerpiece.
